Bhutan is a small Himalayan Kingdom nestled between China in the north and India in the south. The country has about 700,000 inhabitants and is roughly the size of Switzerland. Although small the country is diverse in culture, flora and fauna. It has tropical forests in the south and peaks that reach 7500m/24600feet in the north. The people are predominantly Buddhist in faith and follow the Drukpa Kargyud sect of Mahayana Buddhism or Tantric Buddhism. Buddhism came to Bhutan in the 8th century. There are many beautiful colourful religious festivals witnessed by mask dancing, singing, dancing and congregation of people dressed in colourful silk attire. Festivals are distributed throughout the year in various districts. People are generally laid back and 70% of the population lives off subsistence agriculture. Where ever you go in Bhutan you will be greeted by warm, friendly and simple folks dressed in traditional attire – ‘gho’ and ‘kira’
Of late the country came into lime light as the policy makers of the country and especially the King of Bhutan propounded the theory that development of the country should be measured in Happiness (Gross National Happiness) and the indicator of conventional forms like Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and other indicators is not really a true indicator of the state of its subjects. Happiness is now adopted even by the United Nations.
