GANGKHAR PUENSUM BASE CAMP TREK - BHUTAN
Gangkhar Puensum is the highest mountain in Bhutan and stands as the highest unclimbed mountain in the world with an elevation of 7570metres/24,836feet. It lies on the border with China.
Since 1994, climbing of mountains in Bhutan higher than 6,000 metres has been prohibited out of respect for local spiritual beliefs, and since 2003 mountaineering has been forbidden completely. Gangkhar Puensum may keep its unique status for some time: any higher unclimbed peaks in the world are likely to be subsidiary tops, not separate mountains.
Day1. Arrive at Paro international airport and to Thimphu. Appx. 1hr transfer.
Day2. Thimphu to Gangtey. Appx 5 hrs drive. Can sightsee enroute.
Day3. Gangtey to Jakar/Bumthang. Appx 6hrs drive. Visit the Trongsa Dzong/fort enroute.
Day4. Start your Trek from Choekortoe. Camp. 3200m walking time appx.5hrs.
Day5. Continue to Tsampa. Camp. 3675m/ appx 7hrs distance 20km.
Day6. Tsampa to Singo. 4165m/ appx. 5hrs.
Day7. To Bamurpa.
Trek to the village of Gutchen settlement of few household. The trek is along the river and somewhat challenging trail to the village of Cedi. The height is 4360m. from there another hour you reach your camp at Bamurpa. 4430m. This will be your camp for 2 nights as from here the Base Camp is close. The Mighty Gangkhar Phuensum is visible at its splendor.
Trek time 5hrs.
Day8. Gangkhar Puensum Base.
The day can is used for rest or to explore the vast valley and getting closer to Gangkhar Puensum.
Day9. Trek to Tsawuu. 3780m/walking time 7hrs.
Day 10: Tsawuua - Solang Chhu
From here we take an alternate route to Jakar valley. Trek through Tokshung, Nagar, Kesar, Camp at Solang Chu 4420m near Thole Tsho/Lake. Appx. 6hrs.
Day 11: Solang Chhu – Tashisa
Today after breakfast you have an hour ascent to Thole La (4732m) with grand views of the surrounding mountains. Then it’s a descent into the valley of Tashi Chu, and Lambrong (4070m) Camp at Tashisa (3893m) appx 6hrs hike.
Day 12: Tashisa to Chuzombe
After a while along the valley, we reach Labi Thinla, where a trail branches off to the hot springs of Dur on the way to the Lunana region. The path descends to Gorzam Chhu as far as Kurpang (3210 m) and Lungsum .
The camp ground is called Chuzombe and lies at 3200 m altitude on a meadow surrounded by impenetrable forest.
Walking time approx. 6 hrs.
Day 13: to Jakar.
Today is the last day of the trek which continues through beautiful forest towards Dur, a small village. Later meet at the roads end and your vehicle will be waiting and drive to Jakar.
Day14. At Bumthang.
Rest and Cultural sightseeing. Visit the valley of tang and Mebartso or burning lake. Visit sacred monasteries.
Day15. Fly to Paro.
Visit the national muesuem and 7th century Kichu monastery.
Day16. Taktsang/ Tigesr Nest Monastery Hike.
No visit to Bhutan is complete without the world famous Tiger’s nest Monastery hike. Guru Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche who brought Buddhism to the Himalayas meditated in this monastery cave. It is a power place and the views of the monastery is magical.
